Points of Interest
Évora’s Roman Temple
The 2,000-year-old Roman Temple is one of Évora’s emblematic landmarks and one of Portugal’s most significant ruins.
Built in the 1st century, the temple underwent various transformations and uses over time. In the 5th century, it was almost completely destroyed by the Barbarians and, in the 14th century, it was used as the stronghold of Évora Castle and a butcher’s shop. It was only in the 19th century that the temple was restored to its original Roman form, in one of the first archaeological excavations carried out in the country.
This monument, which bears witness to Évora’s ancient Roman forum, is known as the Temple of Diana.
Chapel of Bones
The Chapel of Bones, built in the 17th century by three Franciscan friars, sends a strong message about the ephemerality and fragility of human life. Right at the entrance, visitors come across the inscription: “We bones who are here, for yours we wait”.
Dedicated to the Lord of the Steps, this chapel is an example of penitential architecture, impressing with its sombre decoration and vivid depiction of Christ’s suffering. Take advantage of this opportunity, it’s free!
Évora Cathedral
Évora Cathedral, the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal, stands at the highest point in the city. Also free to enter, this building, which has watched over the city for centuries, is an outstanding example of the Romanesque-Gothic style.
The chancel, built in the 18th century under the patronage of King João V, is adorned with marble from Estremoz. Outside, the juniper and the lantern tower of the crossing of the naves, crowned by a needle of stone scales, are the most impressive architectural elements.
What if we also included a wine tasting? Prepare your senses for a unique experience: as well as exploring Évora’s main points of interest, enjoy a wine tasting in an enigmatic local winery.
