Sagres

Tavira, located in the Algarve, is a city with a history that stretches back thousands of years. Founded by the Phoenicians around the 8th century BC, the city flourished as an important trading post due to its strategic location along the Gilão River. Later, during the Roman period, Tavira became a regional trade hub, benefiting from the area’s marine and agricultural resources.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Tavira was dominated by the Visigoths and later by the Moors in the 8th century, who left a deep cultural legacy, still visible today in the architecture and traditions. During Muslim rule, Tavira developed into a key coastal city, with significant fortifications and defenses.
In 1242, Tavira was reconquered by the Christians during the expansion of the Kingdom of Portugal and became an important maritime trade center. The city continued to grow, especially in the 15th century, during the Portuguese Age of Discoveries, due to its proximity to North Africa.

In the following centuries, Tavira faced several challenges, including earthquakes and economic crises, but remained a central point in the Algarve, known for its traditional architecture and cultural heritage, still evident in its Roman bridges, churches, and castles.
