Silves

Silves, one of the oldest cities in Portugal, has a history that dates back to the time of the Phoenicians and Greeks. However, it was during the Islamic rule, between the 8th and 13th centuries, that the city reached its peak.

During this period, Silves became the capital of a taifa kingdom. It also emerged as one of the most important cultural and commercial centers in Al-Andalus. Under the name Xelb, the city flourished due to its strategic location along the Arade River. It became a meeting point for traders and intellectuals. Silves Castle, one of the largest Islamic fortresses in Portugal, was built during this period. It remains one of the city’s main symbols to this day.

The Christian reconquest of Silves began in 1189, when King Sancho I, with the help of foreign crusaders, captured the city after a siege. However, the Muslims regained control in 1191 and held it until 1242.

In 1242, Paio Peres Correia, master of the Order of Santiago, definitively reconquered the city. After the reconquest, Silves began to lose its economic significance, especially due to the silting of the Arade River, which reduced its access to the sea.

Over the following centuries, Silves remained a religious center, as evidenced by the construction of the Silves Cathedral. In the 19th century, the city experienced an economic revival, driven by citrus production, particularly oranges, an iconic product of the region.

Today, Silves is a tourist destination of great historical and cultural value. Its heritage, such as the castle, cathedral, and archaeological museum, attracts visitors eager to learn about the city’s Islamic and Christian legacy. This rich history is celebrated annually at the Silves Medieval Fair.
