Inaugurated in 1886, its central span of 172 meters (564 feet) was the longest of its kind in the world at the time — a groundbreaking achievement in engineering.
The bridge was designed by Téophile Seyrig, a German architect and former business partner of Gustave Eiffel, whose influence is clear in the bridge’s elegant ironwork and monumental scale.
Today, the upper deck is used by the metro and pedestrians, offering breathtaking views of both riverbanks, while the lower deck serves road traffic and connects two of the region’s most historic and vibrant districts.
