Standing proudly in the historic center of Viseu, the Sé de Viseu (Viseu Cathedral) is a monument of deep spiritual and architectural significance, blending Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, and Baroque styles — the result of centuries of evolution since its origins in the 12th century.
Seen from afar, the outline of the Cathedral’s towers is a point of reference for anyone visiting the city of Viseu. The current cathedral was built next to a primitive Swabian-Visigoth temple that would date from the 10th century, a time when the town was the capital of an extensive territory limited between the Douro and Mondego rivers.
However, it was during the reign of D. Afonso Henriques that the imposing cathedral, a symbol of Viseense history, began to take shape.
