Caldeira Velha
A warm waterfall and thermal pools in the forest of São Miguel, surrounded by lush vegetation.

On the northern slopes of São Miguel, the Caldeira Velha is a warm waterfall that falls into natural pools among dense forest. Fed by volcanic springs, its water is rich in minerals, and the surrounding reserve protects a lush landscape of ferns, mosses and native trees.
Warm water in the forest
The springs rise from the volcanic system of the Água de Pau massif and flow over a small waterfall into a series of pools, one of them warm enough for bathing. The site is a protected natural monument, and its humidity supports a rich cover of ferns and mosses.
