Museu de Arte Nova

A museum in an Art Nouveau house in Aveiro, devoted to the style that shaped the city.

The Art Nouveau Museum in Aveiro

Aveiro is one of the Portuguese cities most marked by Art Nouveau, and the Museu de Arte Nova occupies one of its finest examples: the Casa do Major Pessoa, on the city’s central avenue. Inside, the museum explores the style through furniture, decorative arts and the building itself.

Art Nouveau in Aveiro

The house was built at the beginning of the twentieth century and is decorated with the curving lines, wrought iron and floral motifs typical of the style. The museum opened in the restored building and presents the Art Nouveau movement in Aveiro and beyond, with a collection that includes furniture, ceramics, glass and metalwork.

What to see

  • The Casa do Major Pessoa, with its original facade and interiors.
  • Art Nouveau furniture, ceramics and decorative objects.
  • Documents and photographs on the style in Aveiro.
  • A city centre that preserves many other Art Nouveau buildings.
