Museu de José Malhoa

Portugal’s first purpose-built museum, in the park at Caldas da Rainha, with the largest collection of works by the naturalist painter José Malhoa.

The Museu de José Malhoa in the Parque D. Carlos I, Caldas da Rainha

In the green heart of Caldas da Rainha, the Museu de José Malhoa occupies a building designed from the outset as a museum, among the first of its kind in Portugal. Inside are the largest group of works by José Malhoa and an important collection of Portuguese painting and sculpture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

A museum in the park

The museum is set in the Parque D. Carlos I, next to the town’s historic thermal hospital, and its gardens hold a collection of sculpture in the open air. It is devoted above all to José Malhoa (1855-1933), one of the leading names of Portuguese naturalism, who was born and raised in Caldas da Rainha.

What to see

  • The largest assembled collection of paintings by José Malhoa.
  • Portuguese painting and sculpture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
  • Ceramics and decorative arts, reflecting the town’s ceramic tradition.
  • The park itself, with sculptures and the historic spa buildings of Caldas da Rainha.

Visiting the museum

The museum is at Parque D. Carlos I, 2500-109 Caldas da Rainha. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with a break at midday, and is closed on Mondays. Opening hours vary with the season, so check the official website before your visit.
