Museu Nacional Grão Vasco
Discover the Museu Nacional Grão Vasco in Viseu, home to the remarkable sixteenth-century altarpieces of Vasco Fernandes, one of Portugal’s greatest painters.

In the granite heart of Viseu, beside the cathedral, the Museu Nacional Grao Vasco guards the finest surviving body of work by Vasco Fernandes, the Renaissance painter known as Grao Vasco. For anyone travelling through central Portugal, this is the place to see Portuguese painting at its sixteenth-century zenith, and to understand why Viseu was once a leading artistic centre.
A museum in a historic palace
The museum was founded in 1916 to preserve the artistic and archaeological heritage of the Viseu region, above all the paintings of Vasco Fernandes (c. 1475-1542). It occupies the Paco dos Tres Escaloes, a sober granite building begun in 1593 next to the cathedral, which was later adapted to museum use.
Between 2001 and 2004 the museum was comprehensively renovated by the architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, whose intervention gave the historic palace a contemporary museum layout while preserving its relationship with the cathedral square. The museum belongs to the national network of museums and monuments.
