Vila Franca do Campo

A historic town on São Miguel in the Azores, with a famous chapel and views over the islet.

Panorama of Vila Franca do Campo

On the south coast of São Miguel, Vila Franca do Campo was the first capital of the island and remains one of its most historic towns. Its chapel above the sea, its islet and its green surroundings make it a memorable stop in the Azores.

History and identity

Founded in the fifteenth century, Vila Franca do Campo was the capital of São Miguel until a devastating earthquake in 1522. The town was rebuilt, and its chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz, on a hill above the coast, has become one of the best-known monuments of the Azores.

What to see and do

  • The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Paz, with its staircase and views.
  • The islet of Vila Franca, a volcanic crater in the sea.
  • The historic centre, with its churches and old houses.
  • The coast and the green landscapes of the south of São Miguel.

Gastronomy and traditions

The town is known for its seafood and for the produce of São Miguel, including pineapple and tea from the island’s plantations. Its festivals, with their processions and music, are part of the Azorean calendar.
