At the heart of central Portugal, between the mountains and the Dão vineyards, Viseu is a city of granite, gardens and quiet squares. Its cathedral and its old town are among the finest in the region, and its museum of Renaissance painting holds one of the great collections of Portuguese art.
History and identity
Viseu has Roman origins and became an important city in the Middle Ages, seat of a bishopric and of a royal court at times. Its old town, enclosed by the remains of its walls, preserves the atmosphere of a historic city, with churches, palaces and narrow streets.
