Museu do Carro Elétrico
Porto’s tram museum, with a collection of historic electric trams and horse-drawn cars in a former power station.

Porto’s trams are among the city’s best-loved features, and the Museu do Carro Elétrico tells their story. In a former power station by the river at Massarelos, the museum keeps a collection of electric trams, trailers and horse-drawn cars, many of them restored and still in working order.
A museum of Porto’s trams
The museum belongs to STCP, the city’s public transport operator, and occupies the old Massarelos power station, which once supplied the electricity that drove the network. The collection spans the whole history of the tram in Porto, from the horse-drawn cars of the nineteenth century to the electric trams of the twentieth.
What to see
- Historic electric trams, including examples that still run on the city’s heritage lines.
- A horse-drawn tram from the earliest years of public transport in Porto.
- Trailers, maintenance vehicles and the machinery of the old power station.
- A riverside setting in Massarelos, a short ride from the centre on the heritage tram.
Visiting the museum
