Its name is rooted in religion: according to legend, it was named after a statue of the Virgin Mary brought from Nazareth (in present-day Israel) by a monk in the 4th century. This legend continues to shape the town\u2019s strong Marian devotion, particularly at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazar\u00e9, the historic upper district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geographically, Nazar\u00e9 is divided into three distinct zones: the beachfront town center (Praia), the clifftop area, and the inland neighborhood of Pederneira.
