The convent itself, founded in the fifteenth century, is part of the experience, with its church, cloisters and the tomb of its foundress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From convent to museum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum was created in 1917 and opened in 1927, installing the region&#8217;s collections in the former Franciscan convent. Its rooms display painting, sculpture, goldsmithery and archaeology, while the church preserves the Gothic tomb of the Duchess of Burgundy, daughter of the convent&#8217;s founders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Painting, sculpture and goldsmithery from the Beja region.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Archaeology, from prehistory to the Roman and Islamic periods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The convent church and cloisters, with their Gothic and Manueline details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Temporary exhibitions on the history and heritage of the Alentejo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting the museum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum is at Largo da Concei\u00e7\u00e3o, Beja, in the historic centre.
