Its historic centre keeps the quiet charm of the region, and the views from its walls stretch far across the countryside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town grew up around its castle, an important stronghold in the Middle Ages, when it guarded the road between Lisbon and \u00c9vora. Inside the walls once stood a royal palace and a monastery; today the ruins, the gates and the long curtain walls still shape the town&#8217;s skyline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see and do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The castle hill, with its walls, gates and wide views.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The historic centre, with its arcaded squares and churches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The town&#8217;s museums and old houses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The surrounding plain, with its cork oaks and olive groves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gastronomy and traditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Montemor-o-Novo shares the cuisine of the Alentejo \u2014 olive oil, bread, pork and rich stews \u2014 and keeps the region&#8217;s traditions of music and craft. Its festivals follow the slow calendar of the plain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Montemor-o-Novo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Montemor-o-Novo is in the Alentejo, about 30 kilometres west of \u00c9vora, reached by road.
