Its royal basilica, its white streets and the open country around it \u2014 home to great bustards and little bustards \u2014 make it a place apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town&#8217;s story is bound to the legendary Battle of Ourique, fought nearby in 1139, and to the royal basilica built to celebrate it in the sixteenth century. Its interior, lined with remarkable tiles, is one of the finest in the Alentejo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see and do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The royal basilica, with its tile panels and sacred art.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The historic centre, with its whitewashed streets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The steppe landscapes around the town, with their birdlife.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Birdwatching in the cereal plains \u2014 bustards, sandgrouse and raptors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gastronomy and traditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Castro Verde shares the cooking of the Baixo Alentejo \u2014 bread, olive oil, pork and lamb \u2014 and its festivals follow the agricultural calendar of the plain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town is close to the historic centres of <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/de\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/alentejo-region\/serpa\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Serpa<\/a> and M\u00e9rtola, both within easy reach by road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Castro Verde<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Castro Verde is in the Baixo Alentejo, about 45 kilometres from Beja, reached by road.
