Today its iron-vaulted hall holds two worlds under one roof: the traditional market of fresh produce and fish, and a famous food hall where some of the city&#8217;s best-known chefs serve their cooking in a lively, informal setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market opened in the 1880s, replacing the old riverside markets that had fed the city for centuries, and its position by the river and the ferry docks made it the natural gateway of fresh goods arriving by boat. A fire in 1897 and decades of change followed; in 2014 the building was renewed, keeping the market at its heart while opening the great hall to restaurants and events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to find and discover<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The traditional market: fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and flowers from around Lisbon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The food hall, with counters from well-known Portuguese chefs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The nineteenth-century iron architecture of the great hall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Riverside walks along the Tagus and the ferry terminal next door.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Products and specialities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside the daily market produce, the food hall serves the flavours of Portugal \u2014 from fish and seafood to cheeses, hams, pastries and wines \u2014 in small, varied portions that make a visit easy at any time of day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market is a short walk from the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/de\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/lisbon-surroundings\/museu-nacional-de-arte-contemporanea-do-chiado\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Museu Nacional de Arte Contempor\u00e2nea do Chiado<\/a>sowie das <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/de\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/lisbon-surroundings\/feira-da-ladra\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Feira da Ladra<\/a> und der <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/de\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/lisbon-surroundings\/mercado-de-campo-de-ourique\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercado de Campo de Ourique<\/a> are other market stops in the city.
