Its iron structure, from the early twentieth century, still holds the daily fish trade, and the square around it \u2014 the Pra\u00e7a do Peixe \u2014 has become one of the liveliest corners of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market, opened in 1910 as the Mercado Jos\u00e9 Est\u00eav\u00e3o, belongs to the generation of iron-and-glass market halls built across Portugal a century ago, and it kept its trade through the city&#8217;s transformations. The renovation of the square and the market gave new life to the old waterfront, without losing its working character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to find and discover<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The fish hall, with the catch of the Ria de Aveiro and the coast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The restaurant above the market, looking over the square.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Pra\u00e7a do Peixe, lined with caf\u00e9s, restaurants and bars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The canals and moliceiro boats of the old quarter around it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Products and specialities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aveiro&#8217;s lagoon provides fish and shellfish \u2014 including the clams and eels of the ria, at the heart of the city&#8217;s cooking \u2014 and the market is the place to see the day&#8217;s catch arrive from the boats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market is in the historic centre of <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/de\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/center-of-portugal\/aveiro\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Aveiro<\/a>, close to the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/de\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/center-of-portugal\/museu-de-aveiro-santa-joana\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Museu de Aveiro<\/a> and the city&#8217;s canals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market is at the Largo da Pra\u00e7a do Peixe, in central Aveiro, reached on foot from the canals.
