Inhame, vines and maize grow on these platforms of lava beside the sea, and the trails that connect them are among the most beautiful walks of the Azores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The faj\u00e3s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A faj\u00e3 is a flat shelf of land formed at the base of the volcanic cliffs, by lava flows or by the collapse of the high cliffs. On the south coast of S\u00e3o Jorge, between Velas and Calheta, dozens of them line the shore, each with its own paths, natural pools and small communities \u2014 from Faj\u00e3 do Ouvidor, with its famous swimming spots, to Faj\u00e3 Grande and Faj\u00e3 dos Cubres, with their chapel and lagoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Faj\u00e3 do Ouvidor, with its natural pools by the sea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faj\u00e3 Grande and the trail along the coastline of the faj\u00e3s.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faj\u00e3 dos Cubres, with its small lagoon and chapel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The viewpoints of the south coast, high above the faj\u00e3s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">S\u00e3o Jorge is reached by plane or ferry, and the faj\u00e3s are explored on foot, by the trails that link the villages of the south coast; the paths cross cliffs and rocky shores, so walkers should go prepared and check the conditions and marked routes with the local information.
