By the end of 2025, around 10 more municipalities are expected to introduce the tax, reflecting a growing trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-regions-with-active-taxation\">Regions with active taxation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Madeira and the Azores have been at the forefront of implementing tourist taxes. In <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/es\/regioes_turisticas_term\/madeira\/\">Madeira<\/a>, the fixed rate is \u20ac2 per night, applicable for up to seven nights. Meanwhile, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/es\/regioes_turisticas_term\/azores\/\">Azores<\/a>, six municipalities on <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/es\/localidad\/sao-miguel\/\">Isla de S\u00e3o Miguel<\/a> \u2013 Ponta Delgada, Ribeira Grande, Lagoa, Vila Franca do Campo, Povoa\u00e7\u00e3o, and Nordeste \u2013 have introduced a \u20ac2 per night tax, capped at three nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/es\/regioes_turisticas_term\/lisbon-and-surroundings\/\">Lisboa<\/a>, a pioneer in introducing the tax back in 2016, currently charges the highest rate in the country at \u20ac4 per night, with exemptions for children under 13 years old. <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/es\/to-visit\/porto-and-north\/\">Oporto<\/a>, following a similar model, has charged \u20ac2 per night since 2018. Cities like Almada and <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/es\/localidad\/nazare\/\">Nazar\u00e9 <\/a>are planning to implement their own tourist taxes soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-regional-differences\"> Regional differences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/es\/regioes_turisticas_term\/alentejo\/\">Alentejo <\/a>remains the only region in Portugal without municipalities applying a tourist tax. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/es\/localidad\/evora\/\">\u00c9vora<\/a> has already begun discussions and is preparing regulations to introduce one in the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/es\/regioes_turisticas_term\/algarve\/\">Algarve<\/a>, the tax is charged in seven out of the region\u2019s 16 municipalities. During the high season (April to October), the rate reaches \u20ac2 per night, while in the low season (November to March), it is reduced to \u20ac1 per night. <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/es\/localidad\/faro\/\">Faro <\/a>applies a fixed rate of \u20ac1.50 per night, while Vila Real de Santo Ant\u00f3nio, the region\u2019s pioneer, charges \u20ac1 per night, with reduced rates for camping and caravan parks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-additional-charges\">Additional charges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to overnight stays, some cities, like Lisbon and <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/es\/localidad\/funchal\/\">Funchal<\/a>, have introduced taxes for cruise ship passengers. Both cities charge \u20ac2 per person, applying similar criteria as those for hotel stays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>With 308 municipalities in Portugal, there is still room for further expansion. Municipalities such as Terras de Bouro, Matosinhos, and Bai\u00e3o are among those planning to start collecting the tax by 2025.
