A collegiate church of medieval origin, it grew beside the town&#8217;s first market, and the Gothic monument in front of it \u2014 the Padr\u00e3o do Salado \u2014 marks the square where the medieval cortes were once held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The church was rebuilt in the fourteenth century, in the years after the battle of Aljubarrota, when the king endowed the old collegiate of Guimar\u00e3es in thanks for victory. Around it grew the Largo da Oliveira, the civic heart of the town, with its arcaded houses, and the church has kept its role in the city&#8217;s life ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Gothic and Manueline naves, with their carved retables.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Padr\u00e3o do Salado, the Gothic monument in front of the church.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cloister and the church&#8217;s sacred art.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The historic square, with its arcades and old houses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The church is on the Largo da Oliveira, in the centre of Guimar\u00e3es, reached on foot from the main squares.
