About this experience

The tall, steep cliffs of this stretch, despite being exposed to the salty, stubborn sea wind, are a nesting site for more than 20 species of birds! These include the jackdaw, the shag, the kestrel, the rock dove, the white stork, the peregrine falcon and the black redstart. It is worth staying quiet and discreetly keeping watch over the cliff from above, enjoying the flight of these birds, especially in spring and near Cabo Sardão.

Along the coast you will find signs of palaeoclimates, that is, climates of the past that were “written” into the rocks. Look at the consolidated dunes, that is, ancient dunes in which the sand has turned to rock. They formed when the sea was more than 100 metres below its present level, which means that the beach was more than 60 km away to the west. On these dunes it was possible to find traces of prehistoric people’s picnics and shells of animals typical of very cold climates, a sign of the glaciations that occurred in the past. But we also have signs of periods of tropical or near-tropical climate. This is the case of the sands and sandstones with striking reddish tones, the result of the accumulation of iron oxides.
