They are done without haste, without stress, zigzagging among islands, islets and sandbanks, seeing the wildlife and flora up close, all calmly. After all, we have 2h30, enough time for a trip and to discover the River Tagus. All this, always surrounded by comfort and nature.

We board the “Rio-a-Dentro”, at Cais do Escaroupim or at the Marina de Salvaterra de Magos. It always depends on the tide and the time of day. We go with the flow of the waters and the current, silently among the verdant banks of willows and ash trees.

We zigzag among islands, sandbanks and side channels. Only in this way can we visit those places that look like paradise. Horses grazing freely on the islands, hundreds of birds of different species and fish jumping in the river. Places you usually only see on picture postcards and in television documentaries.

If the tide allows, we sail among islands and side channels, places lost in time where hardly anyone goes. All to see some of the many “”magic corners”” that the River Tagus keeps for us, where hundreds of birds live, nest or spend the night.

We sail past Ilha das Garças, Ilha dos Cavalos, Ilha dos Amores, among others. We pass the “”Aldeia Avieira”” of Palhota and Escaroupim and reach as far as Valada. And we head down the river, to the “”Porto da Palha”” and the “”Mouchão da Casa Branca””, the island where we can see, in the wild, the Lusitano foals of the Coudelaria de Alter Real. With luck, we may even get to know “”Praia Doce””.

To watch, at dusk, the return of the Cattle Egrets to Ilha das Garças is simply wonderful. Sailing on the Rio-a-Dentro and seeing the herons, flock after flock, flying close by on their way to the island. A marvel!
