About this experience
This “Green & Blue” route explores the western and central parts of the island. You will visit the legendary Sete Cidades, famous for its twin lakes and folklore, and the Lagoa do Fogo, a high-altitude nature reserve that remains the most untouched and wild landscape on the island.
The Itinerary (7-8 Hours)
Period Location / Activity Why stop here?
Morning Sete Cidades Massif Focus on the “Boca do Inferno” hike and the main viewpoints.
Lunch Sete Cidades or Ribeira Grande Try local “Bife à Regional” or fresh fish from the coast.
Early Afternoon Ribeira Grande & Coast Explore the historic center or the Santa Bárbara surf beach.
Mid Afternoon Caldeira Velha / Waterfall Soak in thermal pools or see the Salto do Cabrito waterfall.
Late Afternoon Lagoa do Fogo Peaks Catch the late light at the highest viewpoints of the island.
Emblematic Sites to Visit
Boca do Inferno Viewpoint: Often called the “Stairway to Heaven.” It offers a panoramic view of the Lagoa do Canário, Lagoa Rasa, and the Sete Cidades caldera all at once.
Vista do Rei: The classic postcard view. Right next to it is the abandoned Monte Palace Hotel, which adds a mysterious atmosphere to the landscape.
Sete Cidades Village: A peaceful village inside the crater. Visit the St. Nicholas Church and walk across the bridge separating the Green and Blue lakes.
Lagoa do Fogo (Pico da Barrosa): The highest point. On clear days, you can see both the North and South coasts of the island from here, with the turquoise lake sitting deep in the crater below.
Caldeira Velha: A lush, jungle-like park with a waterfall and iron-rich thermal pools (requires booking in advance).
Salto do Cabrito: A hidden waterfall tucked away in a valley, perfect for a quick photo and a walk along the hydroelectric pipes.
Pro Tip: Weather is key! Check the SpotAzores webcams in the morning. If the mountains are cloudy, start with the coast; if it’s clear, head to the viewpoints immediately to ensure you get the best photos.
