Estremoz

A marble town in the Alentejo, with a hilltop castle, a medieval quarter and a famous market.

The town of Estremoz with its castle

Estremoz rises above the Alentejo plain around its castle, a hilltop stronghold with a medieval quarter of white houses and narrow streets. It is known for its marble, quarried nearby, and for one of the most famous markets in the south of Portugal.

History and identity

The castle was founded in the thirteenth century and became an important stronghold on the road between Lisbon and the Spanish border. The town grew around it, and its marble — used in churches, houses and pavements — has shaped its appearance for centuries.

What to see and do

  • The castle and its tower, with views over the plain.
  • The historic centre, with its marble-lined streets and old churches.
  • The Rossio and its arcaded square.
  • The marble quarries and workshops around the town.

Gastronomy and traditions

Estremoz’s Saturday market is one of the largest in the Alentejo, and the town is known for its marble crafts and for the robust cuisine of the region, including the Alentejo bread and pork dishes.

Visiting Estremoz

Estremoz is in the Alentejo, about 50 kilometres north-east of Évora, reached by road. For the market, castle and local events, check the official website before your visit.
