Leiria

Leiria is a prominent city in the Central region of Portugal, with a history that dates back to Roman times.

Strategically located between Lisbon and Porto, Leiria has grown in importance over the centuries, particularly during the Middle Ages. Its castle, built in the 12th century by D. Afonso Henriques, the founder of Portugal, was a key point in the defense against Moorish invasions. It also played a crucial role in the consolidation of the national territory.

The city flourished as a commercial and cultural center over the centuries, especially during the reign of D. Dinis, who made Leiria one of his favorite residences and promoted the region’s development. The king is also known for having ordered the planting of the famous Pinhal de Leiria. This forest later played a vital role in the construction of ships during the Age of Discoveries.

Today, Leiria is a modern and dynamic city but retains its historical essence, visible in its monuments and traditions. The urban center blends the old and the new, with narrow streets and ancient squares contrasting with modern avenues. It is a city that continues to evolve while maintaining a connection to its past.
