Museu do Dinheiro
The story of money, in the ruins of the old church of São Julião, in the Baixa of Lisbon.

In the Baixa of Lisbon, in the remains of the old church of São Julião, the Museu do Dinheiro tells the story of money: from the first coins to the banknotes of today, through the history of the Banco de Portugal and of the economy of the country. Suspended between the ruins of the church and the modern building, the museum is one of the unexpected visits of the centre of the city.
The museum
The museum belongs to the Banco de Portugal and opened its doors in the heart of the Baixa, on the site of the old church of São Julião — destroyed by the earthquake of 1755 — whose stones and arches were kept in the new building. Its collections gather coins, notes and objects of the history of money, with exhibitions that explain how money appeared, how it is made and how it moved the world, in a space that joins archaeology and economy.
