Levada das 25 Fontes

The classic walk of Rabaçal, from the levada to the waterfall of the 25 Fontes.

The levada and bridge on the 25 Fontes walk

In the green heart of the island, at Rabaçal, the Levada das 25 Fontes follows one of the old water channels of Madeira through the laurel forest to a waterfall that falls into a dark pool — one of the classic walks of the island, and one of the most beautiful ways of entering the laurissilva of the interior.

The walk

The levada — the narrow channel that carries the water of the mountains — runs through the humid forest of Rabaçal, in the municipality of Calheta, among ferns, laurels and moss. The path follows the channel to the waterfall of the 25 Fontes, where the water falls in threads from the rock into a cold pool; on the way, the route passes a long tunnel and descends by stairs, in the middle of the forest. Nearby, other trails — like the path to the Risco waterfall — share the same starting point.

What to see

  • The waterfall of the 25 Fontes and its pool, at the end of the walk.
  • The laurel forest of Rabaçal, along the levada.
  • The tunnel and the stairs of the route, cut in the rock.
  • The neighbouring paths of Rabaçal, towards the Risco waterfall.

Visiting

The walk starts at Rabaçal, reached by the road from Calheta and the plateau of Paul da Serra; the routes here are organised, with access controls in busy periods. The path is wet and can be slippery, the tunnel and the stairs demand a lamp and care, and the mountain weather changes quickly, so walkers should go prepared and check the official conditions of Visit Madeira before setting out.

Nearby

The natural pools of Porto Moniz and the cliffs of Ponta do Pargo continue the journey through the green west of Madeira.
