Parque Natural do Douro Internacional
The wild gorge of the Douro along the Spanish border, with cliffs, birds of prey and medieval villages.

Along the border with Spain, the Douro has cut one of the most dramatic gorges in the Iberian Peninsula. The Parque Natural do Douro Internacional protects this canyon and its cliffs, home to birds of prey and to historic villages that grew up on the edge of the river.
A river between two countries
For some 120 kilometres the Douro forms the frontier, flowing through a deep, rocky valley. The park protects the Mediterranean vegetation of the slopes and an important population of birds of prey, including griffon vultures and eagles, which nest on the cliffs.
What to see and do
- The viewpoints above the river gorge, with views into Spain.
- River cruises along the Douro, from Miranda do Douro.
- Birdwatching, especially birds of prey on the cliffs.
- The historic villages and castles of the border, including Miranda do Douro.
Visiting the park
The park stretches along the Douro between Miranda do Douro and Barca d’Alva, in the north-east of Portugal. Access is free; for river trips, trails and local conditions, check the official information before your visit.
