During Roman times, Monsaraz was already a strategic point due to its hilltop location, offering a privileged view of the Guadiana River, which facilitated the control of trade routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1167, during the Christian Reconquest, Monsaraz was captured by the legendary Geraldo Sem Pavor and later donated to the Order of the Temple in 1232, which played a crucial role in building the castle and organizing the village’s defenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the reign of King Dinis, the castle was rebuilt and reinforced. This consolidated the village as one of the main defenses in the region. With the fall of the Order of the Temple, the village passed into the hands of the Order of Christ. This transition perpetuated its military importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 19th century, Monsaraz ceased to be the seat of the municipality. The seat was transferred to Reguengos de Monsaraz, marking the beginning of a period of relative isolation and preservation of its historical authenticity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Monsaraz is a well-preserved example of Portuguese medieval architecture. It attracts visitors who wish to explore one of the last bastions of living history in the Alentejo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
