Its collections of sacred art, goldsmithery and sculpture make it one of the finest small museums in Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A museum in a collegiate church<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum was created in 1928 and named after the historian Alberto Sampaio, a native of Guimar\u00e3es. Installed in the medieval buildings of the Colegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, it preserves the memory of the town&#8217;s role in the foundation of Portugal and in the great events of the fourteenth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The tunic attributed to King Jo\u00e3o I, said to have been worn at the Battle of Aljubarrota.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Religious goldsmithery, including crosses, reliquaries and liturgical silver.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sculpture and painting from the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Romanesque cloister and the museum&#8217;s quiet courtyards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting the museum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum is in the historic centre of Guimar\u00e3es, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
