Its medieval castle and its walled old town are among the best preserved in the country, and the surrounding mountains and plains are full of character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bragan\u00e7a grew up around its castle in the twelfth century and became the seat of the House of Braganza, the family that gave Portugal its kings from 1640 onwards. As a frontier city, it kept its walls and its military character for centuries, and today its historic centre is one of the most complete medieval ensembles in Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see and do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The castle and its keep, with views over the city and the mountains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Domus Municipalis, a rare Romanesque civic building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The walled old town, with its churches and granite streets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cathedral and the city&#8217;s museums.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gastronomy and traditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bragan\u00e7a keeps the traditions of Tr\u00e1s-os-Montes, with smoked meats, local olive oil and the robust dishes of the mountains. The nearby Mirandese plateau preserves its own language and customs, and the city&#8217;s festivals follow the calendar of the border country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bragan\u00e7a is the gateway to the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/fr\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/porto-and-north\/parque-natural-de-montesinho\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Parque Natural de Montesinho<\/a>, one of the wildest corners of Portugal, and to the border town of <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/fr\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/porto-and-north\/miranda-do-douro\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Miranda do Douro<\/a>, above the gorge of the Douro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Bragan\u00e7a<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bragan\u00e7a is in the north-east of Portugal, reached by road from Porto and Braga.
