Reached by a road that winds through the mountains, it has kept its isolation and its character, with chestnut groves and steep terraced slopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village takes its name \u2014 &#8220;Corral of the Nuns&#8221; \u2014 from the nuns of the Santa Clara convent in Funchal, who took refuge here in the sixteenth century during attacks on the city. Sheltered by the mountains, the valley was for centuries one of the most isolated places on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see and do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The valley views from Eira do Serrado and Boca dos Namorados.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The village and its church, at the bottom of the valley.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The chestnut groves and the terraced slopes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The walking trails around the valley.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gastronomy and traditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curral das Freiras is known for its chestnuts \u2014 celebrated in the village&#8217;s annual chestnut festival \u2014 and for the chestnut liqueur and honey of the valley. Its simple restaurants serve the mountain cooking of Madeira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The village is a short drive from Funchal, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/fr\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/madeira-region\/jardim-botanico-da-madeira\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Jardim Bot\u00e2nico da Madeira<\/a> et l\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/fr\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/madeira-region\/quinta-do-palheiro-ferreiro\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro<\/a> are close by in the hills above the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting Curral das Freiras<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curral das Freiras is in the municipality of C\u00e2mara de Lobos, about 15 kilometres from Funchal, reached by road.
