Its stalls display the catch of the day with the pride of a centuries-old fishing tradition, and its walls are covered with remarkable tile panels that turn a market visit into a lesson in the region&#8217;s fish and shellfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and identity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market was built in the late nineteenth century as the municipal market of Set\u00fabal, a city long defined by its fishing fleet. The celebrated azulejo panels, added in the twentieth century, depict the fish and shellfish of the Sado and the coast, making the market one of the most photographed interiors in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to find and discover<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The fish and shellfish stalls, with the catch of the Sado and the Atlantic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The tile panels, illustrating the species sold under the same roof.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The produce and regional stalls of the surrounding halls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The market&#8217;s lively mornings, at the heart of the city&#8217;s daily life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Products and specialities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set\u00fabal is famous for its fish and shellfish \u2014 from sardines and choco (cuttlefish) to the clams and oysters of the estuary \u2014 and the market is the place to see them at their freshest, alongside the fruit, vegetables and cheeses of the peninsula of Set\u00fabal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/fr\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/lisbon-surroundings\/parque-natural-da-arrabida\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Parque Natural da Arr\u00e1bida<\/a>, with its hills and coves above the sea, begins just outside the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market is in the centre of Set\u00fabal, about 50 kilometres south of Lisbon, reached by road and rail.
