Here stood a great rural villa \u2014 part farm, part mansion \u2014 whose monumental fa\u00e7ade still puzzles and impresses visitors nearly two thousand years after it was built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A villa that became a convent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The site was first occupied in the late Neolithic and later housed a Roman agricultural estate that grew, through successive building campaigns, into a luxurious residence with baths and a temple. In medieval times the abandoned mansion was adapted by monks, who founded a small convent dedicated to S\u00e3o Cucufate and left medieval frescoes that can still be seen. Excavations in the 20th century revealed not one but three successive villas on the site. It was classified as a National Monument in 1947.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The monumental two-storey fa\u00e7ade and its rare vaulted gallery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remains of the baths and the temple<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medieval frescoes in the former convent church<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The medieval cemetery of the monks, found behind the villa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The museum centre in the Casa do Arco, in Vila de Frades<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">S\u00e3o Cucufate lies near the village of Vila de Frades, in the municipality of Vidigueira, about 20 kilometres from Beja. The site is managed by Patrim\u00f3nio Cultural, I.P.; check current opening hours before you go, as the archaeological area has been subject to requalification works.
