The Serra de S\u00e3o Mamede Natural Park is a green surprise at the gates of Portalegre \u2014 granite and quartzite hills, chestnut woods, cork oaks, cliff-nesting birds and castles on every ridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The highest ground south of the Tagus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The range&#8217;s highest point, at 1,025 metres, is the tallest summit in mainland Portugal south of the Tagus. Geologically it is the western end of the Montes de Toledo, with a climate between Atlantic and Mediterranean that lets holm oaks, chestnuts and olive groves share the slopes. The park holds one of Europe&#8217;s largest bat colonies and a startling biodiversity: eagles, boar, deer and a rich flora, sheltered in areas that have been protected since 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Pico de S\u00e3o Mamede and the Alto da Serra viewpoints<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Castelo de Vide, Marv\u00e3o and Portalegre, the park&#8217;s old towns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Roman city of Ammaia, near Marv\u00e3o<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waterfalls such as the Cascata de S\u00e3o Juli\u00e3o<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cork and chestnut woods along the walking trails<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The park spans the municipalities of Portalegre, Marv\u00e3o, Castelo de Vide and Arronches, all reached from the A23 motorway. The old towns make good bases, and marked trails range from short walks to full-day routes.
