At Pulo do Lobo the great river squeezes into a gorge a few metres wide and drops some twenty metres in a roar of white water \u2014 the highest waterfall in southern Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The wolf&#8217;s leap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name means the wolf&#8217;s leap: only a desperate animal, the legend says, could cross this chasm in a single bound. The gorge marks the place where the river cuts through hard Palaeozoic rock, and the viewpoints on either bank reveal the strangeness of the site \u2014 upstream, the old, broader riverbed carved by ancient climates; below, a channel polished by millennia of water. Jos\u00e9 Saramago, who knew this country well, wrote that here the river &#8216;boils between harsh walls&#8217;. The waterfall lies inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/fr\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/alentejo-region\/parque-natural-do-vale-do-guadiana\/\">Guadiana Valley Natural Park<\/a>, between the walled town of <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/fr\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/alentejo-region\/castelo-de-serpa\/\">Serpa<\/a> and the river port of M\u00e9rtola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The gorge and waterfall from the right-bank viewpoint<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pego dos S\u00e1veis, where the river calms again<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cork-oak and steppe landscapes of the natural park<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The river beaches of the Guadiana, nearby<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The rock engravings of the Guadiana basin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reach the main viewpoint from the village of Vale de Po\u00e7os, signed off the Serpa road; the left-bank route starts from Amendoeira, on the M\u00e9rtola\u2013Beja road. The tracks are dirt roads \u2014 go slowly, and avoid midday heat in summer.
