Google ranks Portugal among the world’s most popular tourist destinations

According to Google Trends data, Portugal has emerged over the past 12 months as the third most searched country on Google Flights, and in July, searches for Portugal in the tourism category reached a new global record.

Portugal has consistently stood out in Google searches, ranking third over the last 12 months and reaching the top spot in July in the global tourism category. This significant increase reflects the growing interest of travelers in the country, making it one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

According to data provided by Google, among the most searched domestic holiday destinations over the past year, the Algarve leads, followed by Madeira and the Azores. Other locations such as Viseu, Funchal, Cascais, Ponta Delgada, and the Berlengas also appear in this ranking.

Notably, rural tourism, which was previously more popular in inland regions, is now garnering greater interest across the entire country, indicating a diversification in tourists’ travel preferences, which solidifies Portugal’s position as a premier tourist destination in the world.

Regarding the most sought-after international destinations by Portuguese travelers for vacations, Brazil stands out, followed by the Maldives, Turkey, Santorini, and Bali. Last year, the most searched foreign tourist spots in Portugal were Disneyland Paris and the Eiffel Tower, according to Google Trends, confirming their status as major tourist destinations in the world.

One of the trends identified through Google searches reveals an increase in interest in luxurious getaways. However, with the cost of living affecting personal finances, people are seeking a good balance between cost and benefit, reflecting a demand for affordable luxury.

In 2024, travelers are prioritizing impactful travel experiences that offer upgrades without excessive costs. Additionally, there is a growing preference for stays in boutique hotels and for exclusive adventures.

Another emerging trend is the popularity of “dupe destinations,” more affordable locations that offer the charm and luxury of more expensive destinations. This trend allows travelers to enjoy luxury experiences without exceeding their budget.

Impact of sporting and cultural events

Large-scale sporting and cultural events also have a significant impact on travel trends. In 2024, the UEFA European Football Championship and the Summer Olympics, held in Germany and France respectively, are expected to increase sales of sports tourism packages by 15%, according to Euromonitor.

This influx of sports and music fans in Europe is expected to boost the number of trips, with visitors from distant locations like North America planning visits to multiple countries before and after these events.

Sustainability and train travel

Sustainability continues to be a priority for brands and consumers in the tourism sector. Train travel, including night trains, has gained prominence in 2024, offering a convenient and unique alternative to long-haul flights. According to Euromonitor, rail transportation is the fastest-growing travel category globally, with an increase of over 35% between 2023 and 2024. A third of eco-adventurers prefer train travel to air travel, reflecting a growing trend in ecotourism.

These trends highlight the diversification and evolution of travel preferences, with Portugal emerging as one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world, and a greater emphasis on sustainability and affordable luxury in travel experiences.
