Forte de São Sebastião
A sixteenth-century fortress on the edge of Angra do Heroísmo, part of the defences of the old Azorean capital.

At the edge of Angra do Heroísmo, the Forte de São Sebastião once guarded the approaches to one of the most important harbours of the Atlantic. Its walls and gate still stand above the water, and its position offers wide views over the bay and the old town.
A fortress of the Atlantic
The fort was built in the sixteenth century, when Angra was a vital stop for ships crossing between Europe, Africa and the Americas and a frequent target for corsairs. Together with the other fortifications of the city, it formed part of a defensive system that has been recognised by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage site of Angra do Heroísmo.
