Santa Cruz da Graciosa

Santa Cruz da Graciosa, the main town on Graciosa Island in the Azores, has a history dating back to the 15th century, with the beginning of the island’s settlement.

Officially founded in 1486, the town grew over the centuries as an important support point for Atlantic maritime routes. Its economy, initially based on agriculture and the production of cereals, wine, and cattle, flourished due to its strategic location. This development was further supported by the growth of the wine and agricultural industries. Santa Cruz played a significant role in resisting pirate and corsair attacks during the 16th and 17th centuries. It defended the island with its fortifications.

Over time, the town consolidated its position as the administrative and religious center of Graciosa. It has maintained to this day its peaceful and traditional character, with streets featuring typical Azorean architecture and a population deeply connected to its religious and cultural traditions.
