Museu de Lisboa

A museum in five parts across Lisbon, telling the story of the city from prehistory to the present.

The garden of the Palácio Pimenta, home of the Museum of Lisbon

The Museu de Lisboa is not one building but five, spread across the city and devoted to its history. Together they tell the story of Lisbon from its earliest settlements to the present day, through archaeology, art, documents and the fabric of the city itself.

One museum, five places

The museum is polynuclear, with its headquarters at the Palácio Pimenta in Campo Grande and other centres at the Roman Theatre, the Casa dos Bicos, the Santo António nucleus near the cathedral and the Torreão Poente on Praça do Comércio. Each place approaches the city from a different angle, and the museum also manages the Roman galleries of Rua da Prata.

What to see

  • The Palácio Pimenta, with the main exhibition on the city’s evolution.
  • The Roman Theatre, one of the most important monuments of Roman Lisbon.
  • The Santo António nucleus, devoted to the city’s most famous saint.
  • The Casa dos Bicos and the Torreão Poente, with temporary exhibitions.

Visiting the museum

The museum’s headquarters are at the Palácio Pimenta, Campo Grande 245, Lisbon, with the other nuclei in the historic centre. Opening hours vary by nucleus, so check the official website before your visit.
