Interior of the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Chiado, Lisbon

The Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporanea do Chiado is Portugal’s national museum of modern and contemporary art. In the heart of Lisbon’s Chiado district, it traces Portuguese art from Romanticism to the present day.

Portugal’s national collection

The museum was created in 1911, in the wake of the republican reforms, and is housed in the former Convento de Sao Francisco. It has occupied its present building since the 1990s, when a renovation gave it a modern interior within the historic walls.

What to see

  • Nineteenth- and twentieth-century Portuguese painting and sculpture.
  • Works by leading artists such as Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, Jose Malhoa, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso and Almada Negreiros.
  • A changing programme of temporary exhibitions drawn from the national collection.

Visiting the museum

The museum is at Rua Serpa Pinto 4, 1200-444 Lisbon, in Chiado, close to the Baixa-Chiado metro station. Opening hours and tickets are published on the official website, so check before your visit.
