Olh\u00e3o, located on the Algarve coast, has a history deeply intertwined with the sea and fishing. Originally a small fishing village, the city began to develop in the 17th century, driven by its proximity to the Ria Formosa. During this period, Olh\u00e3o became an important fishing and fish trading center, attracting residents who built cubist-style houses, a characteristic that still marks the city’s architecture today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early 19th century, Olh\u00e3o stood out for its role in expelling Napoleonic troops during the French invasions. In 1808, Olh\u00e3o’s fishermen organized a successful revolt against the invaders, an event so notable that King Jo\u00e3o VI granted the town the title of \u201cVila de Olh\u00e3o da Restaura\u00e7\u00e3o.\u201d That same year, a group of brave fishermen sailed from Olh\u00e3o to Brazil in a small boat, the “Bom Sucesso” caique, to deliver the news of victory to the king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olh\u00e3o continued to grow and establish itself as one of the most important fishing cities in the Algarve<\/a>, also developing a significant canning industry in the 20th century. Today, the city preserves its traditions and maintains a strong connection to fishing and the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
