Laid out in the nineteenth century around a great glass palace, they combine formal avenues, fountains and lawns with the finest free views over the river and the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">History and character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gardens were created in the 1860s for the Pal\u00e1cio de Cristal, an exhibition palace inspired by London&#8217;s Crystal Palace. The palace itself has gone \u2014 its site now holds the Rosa Mota pavilion \u2014 but the gardens remain, with their romantic layout of avenues, lakes and belvederes looking over the Douro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to see<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The tree-lined avenues and formal parterres of the upper garden.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The viewpoints over the Douro, the bridges and the old city.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fountains, lawns and shaded walks of the gardens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The neighbouring streets of the centre, with their caf\u00e9s and bookshops.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Periodo migliore per la visita<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spring and summer are the liveliest seasons in the gardens, and clear evenings give the best light over the river. The gardens are free to enter and are used all year by the people of Porto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gardens are a short walk from the historic centre of Porto, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/it\/attractions-to-visit\/palacio-da-bolsa\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Pal\u00e1cio da Bolsa<\/a> e <a href=\"https:\/\/realdreams.pt\/it\/attractions-to-visit\/regions-of-portugal\/porto-and-north\/livraria-lello\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Livraria Lello<\/a> both nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gardens are on Rua de Dom Manuel II, in central Porto, reached on foot or by metro and bus.
