Visited with a guide, the cave shows how the islands were made \u2014 the rivers of lava, the roofs that cooled above them and the underground world that few places in the archipelago keep so close to their streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The cave<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gallery of the Gruta do Carv\u00e3o was formed by an ancient flow of lava that crossed the area of Ponta Delgada and cooled from the outside in, leaving an open channel of stone below the surface.
