Belmonte, in the Beira Interior, is a town of unusual depth: a medieval castle, a historic Jewish quarter and a long tradition of scholarship and exploration. Its castle, rebuilt over the centuries, stands at the top of the old town, and the family of the navigator Pedro Álvares Cabral took its name from here.
A castle and a town
The castle dates from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries and was remodelled as a residence by the Cabral family. Belmonte is also known for its Jewish community, which preserved its identity through centuries of persecution, and for the Romanesque church of Santiago and the old Jewish quarter below the castle.
