Café Majestic

A Belle Époque café in the heart of Porto, opened in 1921 and still one of the city’s most beautiful rooms.

The Café Majestic in Porto

On Rua de Santa Catarina, in the middle of Porto, the Café Majestic is one of the most beautiful café rooms in Portugal. Opened in the 1920s, its Belle Époque interior of carved wood, mirrors and marble has welcomed generations of writers, artists and travellers — and it remains a landmark of the city’s daily life.

History and character

The café opened in 1921, in the golden years of the Portuguese Republic, and took its present name soon after. Its interior — the work of the period’s craftsmen — has been carefully kept, and over the decades the house became a stage of the city’s cultural life, between the theatres and the old shops of the street.

What to discover

  • The Belle Époque salon, with its woodwork, mirrors and lamps.
  • The esplanade on Rua de Santa Catarina, one of Porto’s busiest streets.
  • The café’s traditions, from coffee to the city’s literary memories.
  • The neighbouring streets of the Baixa, with their bookshops and old commerce.
