Guimarães 성
기마랑이스 성은 포르투갈에서 가장 상징적인 역사 건축물 가운데 하나로, 나라의 형성에 엄청난 의미를 지니고 있습니다.
Known as the “Cradle of the Nation,” the 성 is closely linked to the story of D. Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, and the independence movement that led to the country’s foundation in the 12th century.
In addition to its historical importance, the Castle of Guimarães is a prime example of medieval architecture and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
History and Architecture of the Guimarães Castle
Mumadona Dias ordered the construction of the original castle in the 10th century to protect the local population from Moorish and Norse invasions. Later, in the 12th century, D. Henrique and D. Teresa, parents of D. Afonso Henriques, expanded and fortified the structure, turning it into a fortress that served as a base for defending the County of Portugal.
Today, visitors can see its shield-shaped layout, surrounded by sturdy towers and imposing walls. The famous central keep, where it is believed that D. Afonso Henriques was born, is also a prominent feature.
The castle was classified as a National Monument in 1910, and in 2007 it was named one of the “Seven Wonders of Portugal,” further highlighting its cultural and heritage value.
