Lisbon city council reduces by 50% the number of Tuk-Tuks authorized to park in the city

With a new approach led by Mayor Carlos Moedas, the municipality aims to halve the number of tuk-tuks that can park on public roads and create specific parking areas for licensed vehicles.

The Lisbon City Council has announced a series of measures to regulate the operation of tuk-tuks in the city, aiming to impose order and discipline on this activity, which has grown uncontrollably in recent years.

Measures to regulate Tuk-Tuk activity in Lisbon

According to the plan released, the Lisbon City Council intends to drastically limit parking locations and the number of licenses issued for tuk-tuks. The new regulations will require all tuk-tuks to obtain a specific license to operate in the city and ensure that drivers receive adequate professional training. The goal is to reduce the number of vehicles authorized to park in Lisbon from 1,000 to 500, while 250 parking spaces will be created exclusively for licensed tuk-tuks.

The municipality is determined to enforce a “zero tolerance” policy in the areas most affected by the uncontrolled presence of these vehicles, which have sparked complaints due to their negative impact on high-density tourist areas. Carlos Moedas emphasized that it is imperative to impose strict order on this activity, which has caused significant problems for the city. Enforcement will be intensified with the collaboration of the Municipal Police, PSP (Public Security Police), and EMEL (Lisbon Mobility and Parking Company). These entities will ensure strict compliance with the new rules.

Collaboration and meetings with involved entities

During this meeting, the main problems related to tuk-tuk operations in Lisbon were identified. Proposals were also presented for more effective management of urban space.

Carlos Moedas also highlighted the need to involve Turismo de Portugal in solving this issue, as this entity is responsible for licensing tourist entertainment vehicles. The Lisbon City Council will request a meeting with Turismo de Portugal to discuss strengthening control over issuing tuk-tuk licenses. They want to ensure that the regulations align with the municipality’s new guidelines.

With these new measures, the Lisbon City Council aims to control the negative impact caused by the disorderly operation of tuk-tuks in the city. The focus is especially on areas with high tourist traffic.

The municipality aims to ensure better urban space management by halving the number of authorized vehicles and creating specific parking areas. This initiative also seeks to improve the quality of life for residents.

The strict enforcement of regulations will be fundamental to the success of this initiative. Collaboration with various entities is also essential to restore order and discipline in the use of tuk-tuks in Lisbon.
