Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport advances sustainability with Biofuels use

Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto has taken a significant step towards sustainability by initiating large-scale biofuel use in its handling operations. This milestone results from a partnership between PRIO, Portway, and Beyond Fuels, which foresees a saving of around one thousand tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions over the next two years.

One year after signing a protocol for the implementation of biofuels, Portway began supplying PRIO’s Zero Diesel B100, a 100% renewable fuel capable of reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 84%. Over the next two years, more than 400,000 liters of this fuel are expected to be used at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport with biofuels, resulting in a significant reduction in environmental impact.

Positive impact on the aviation sector

This initiative, which started as a pilot project in 2023, demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of using biofuels in the aviation sector. With the supply now expanded, Zero Diesel B100 is being used to fuel heavy passenger transport vehicles and GPUs (Ground Power Units) at Porto Airport, reinforcing the commitment to decarbonization.

Rui Alves, director of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, highlighted the crucial role of this initiative: “Portway’s investment in biofuels is an essential step in reducing CO₂ emissions, in line with VINCI Group’s objectives of achieving net-zero emissions in scopes 1 and 2. This is a clear example of how collaboration with partners can deliver significant results.”

Commitment to a greener future

Chloé Lapeyre, CEO of Portway, emphasized the company’s commitment to leading sustainable transformation in the handling sector: “This moment symbolizes Portway and VINCI Airports’ dedication to promoting innovative solutions that minimize environmental impact and create a more sustainable future.”

Carlos Baptista, Commercial Director of PRIO Green Fuels, highlighted the pioneering role of the company: “The introduction of Zero Diesel B100 in Portway’s operations demonstrates that it is possible to efficiently apply sustainable alternatives, contributing to the decarbonization of the airport sector.”

Beyond Fuels, specializing in circular economy and fleet decarbonization, is responsible for managing and executing this project. The collaboration among the companies involved underscores the importance of partnerships in combating climate change at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport with biofuels.

With this initiative, Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport positions itself at the forefront of sustainability in the aviation sector, aligning with global emission reduction goals and building a greener legacy for future generations.
